Dryer Not Heating: Troubleshooting Guide for Homeowners

A dryer that tumbles but doesn't dry usually points to one of three heating components - here's what's safe to check and what isn't.

A dryer that runs its full cycle, tumbles clothes normally, but leaves them just as damp as when they went in is one of the more common calls we get. The cause is almost always in the heating system rather than the drum or motor, and there's a clear order to check things in.

Start With the Lint Filter and Vent

Before assuming a component failure, clean the lint filter thoroughly if you haven't recently, and check that the exhaust vent leading outside isn't blocked or crushed. Heavy lint build-up restricts airflow and can trigger a safety cut-off that stops heating even though nothing has technically broken.

What's Usually Failed If That Doesn't Help

  • A blown thermal fuse - a safety component that cuts heating power if the dryer overheats, often due to lint blockage, and needs full replacement rather than a reset
  • A burnt-out heating element, which lets the drum keep turning normally but stops producing any heat
  • A stuck thermostat that fails to activate the heating circuit correctly

Why the Component-Level Fix Isn't DIY

The thermal fuse, heating element and thermostat are all wired into the dryer's mains-powered circuit, sitting behind the rear or lower panel depending on the model. Testing and replacing them safely means working around live electrical connections, which isn't something to attempt without the right tools and experience.

A Quick Note on Blocked Vents

A blocked exhaust vent isn't just a heating problem - it's also a fire risk over time, since trapped lint is highly flammable. If you've never checked your vent run for build-up, it's worth doing regularly regardless of whether you're having heating issues.

If heating doesn't return after clearing lint and checking the vent, this is an electrical component fault - get a technician to test the thermal fuse, element and thermostat rather than opening the panel yourself.
