A refrigerator that isn't cooling properly can mean anything from a five-minute fix to a compressor replacement, and the symptoms often look identical from the outside. This guide walks through the checks in the order that actually narrows things down, rather than jumping straight to the worst-case scenario.

Step 1: Confirm It's Actually a Cooling Problem

Before assuming a major fault, check whether the freezer is cold but the fridge section isn't - that points to an airflow issue between compartments rather than a compressor failure. Also confirm the thermostat dial or digital setting hasn't been accidentally bumped to a warmer setting, which happens more often than people expect, especially in households with kids.

Step 2: Check the Door Seal

Close the door on a piece of paper at several points around the frame - if it slides out easily, the gasket isn't sealing properly. A worn or torn door gasket lets cold air escape continuously, so the compressor runs constantly without ever bringing the temperature down, which also drives up your electricity bill.
