Samsung 5E Error Code: Why Your Washing Machine Won't Drain
Samsung 5E is a drain error - the machine can't push water out within its expected time. Here's how to narrow down the cause before you call for help.
A 5E code on a Samsung washing machine almost always shows up with visible standing water left in the drum. It means the machine tried to drain and couldn't finish within the time it allows, so it stopped the cycle to avoid overflowing or damaging the motor.
What's Usually Behind It
- A blocked drain filter or pump - the single most common cause, usually from lint, coins, buttons or hair
- A kinked or crushed drain hose behind or under the machine
- A drain pump motor that has failed electrically and simply isn't running
Safe Checks You Can Do
First, look at the drain hose running from the back of the machine to the wall or standpipe and make sure it isn't bent sharply or trapped under the unit. If your model has an accessible drain filter - usually a small hinged door near the bottom front - unplug the machine first, then open it carefully over a shallow tray, since residual water will run out. Clear any debris you find. Run a short rinse-and-spin cycle afterward to see if draining resumes normally.
When It's Not the Filter
If the filter and hose are both clear but you can hear the pump humming without water actually moving, or you hear nothing from the pump at all when the drain phase should start, the pump motor itself is the likely fault. That's an internal electrical component and isn't something to open up without experience.
