Whirlpool F06 Error Code: Motor Fault Explained

F06 on a Whirlpool washing machine points to a motor communication fault. It's a code that almost always needs a technician's diagnostic tools.

F06 is one of the codes Whirlpool washing machine owners hope not to see, because unlike a water-fill or balance error, it points to the motor itself not responding correctly to commands from the control board. It's usually accompanied by the wash stalling partway through, or the drum failing to turn at all despite the machine appearing to run normally otherwise.

What Causes F06

  • Worn motor carbon brushes that can no longer maintain proper electrical contact
  • A faulty motor control board sending incorrect or no signal to the motor
  • A loose or damaged wiring connection between the control board and the motor

Why There's No Real DIY Path Here

Unlike drain or fill errors, there's no external hose or filter to check for F06 - the fault lives in the motor and control electronics themselves. Opening the motor housing or control board requires disconnecting mains power safely and testing components with the right equipment, which is squarely technician territory.

What a Technician Will Typically Check

A technician will usually test the motor's carbon brushes for wear first, since that's the most common and least expensive fix, then check the wiring harness connections before concluding the control board itself needs replacement. The exact cost depends on which of these turns out to be the culprit, and your technician will share an estimate once they've identified it.

F06 is not a code to keep resetting and hoping clears on its own - repeated attempts to run the motor with a genuine fault can cause further damage. Get it looked at as soon as you can.
