Symptoms
How this shows up
- Buzzing, rattling or grinding sound
- Loud clicking when the compressor starts
- Vibration felt on nearby countertops
Diagnosis
Likely causes, ranked
1. Fridge not level
An unlevel fridge can vibrate against the floor or nearby cabinets, especially during the compressor cycle.
2. Condenser or evaporator fan obstruction
Dust, ice build-up or an object touching the fan blades causes a rattling or grinding sound.
3. Worn compressor
An ageing compressor can develop a loud hum or knocking sound as internal components wear down.
Before you call
Safe checks you can do yourself
- Check the fridge is standing level on all four feet
- Make sure nothing (bottles, packaging) is touching the back panel
- Listen to identify whether the noise is from the front (evaporator fan) or back (compressor/condenser fan)
Call a technician if:
- The noise is a loud knock, grind or metallic scrape rather than a normal hum
- Noise is paired with reduced cooling
- The sound has gotten noticeably louder over a few days
